Tourbillon

A watch can inspire when a gifted watchmaker has poured all his skill and heart into its creation. This is why even a journeyman’s piece can carry a hint of the magic that the great masterpieces radiate so powerfully. But such masterpieces cannot simply emerge from routine. They are born when one reaches for the stars.

For centuries, great masters have left their footprints in the snow of history in this way, and the masterpieces of watchmaking have traced a path. The feeling we experience when we hold such a masterpiece in our hands whispers to us that this path leads to a magical place.

Perhaps the next step taken by the manufacture in Oppenheim will bring us a little closer to that magical place!

Tourbillon concept

By the end of my watchmaking training — for which I will always be deeply grateful to the N.G. Hayek Watchmaking School — I had acquired all the skills required to make a flying tourbillon by hand.

Immediately after my training, this project was the greatest challenge imaginable and tested me in a way I had never experienced before in my life. It was the kind of challenge where you cannot be sure whether you can complete it at all, no matter how much time you invest.

Overcoming this hurdle gave me the bug for fine watchmaking — Haute Horlogerie — and from then on I knew that one day I would build highly complicated watches.

My path towards that goal led me to my own watchmaking workshop, where, over more than ten years of complex repairs and restorations, I continually honed my skills in designing and manufacturing replacements for missing or severely damaged watch components. At the same time, I encountered countless examples of elegant designs, along with counterexamples that clearly did not work well and failed time and again.

With the final step — the full commissioning of the CNC machine in July 2026 — a new chapter begins for me: the birth of a watch manufacture and the fulfilment of a vision.

Origins

The dream of building my own watches has been with me for many years. Long before the first concrete designs took shape, I knew that I wanted to manufacture as many components as possible myself. But that was precisely where the problem began: having high-quality individual components — such as a watch case — made in small quantities was either virtually impossible or yielded disappointing quality. The surface finishes, precision and details fell short of the standards I set for a high-quality mechanical watch.

CNC

So I began to immerse myself in CNC manufacturing and high-precision machining. I initially experimented with a borrowed machine in the €10,000 price bracket. It was possible to produce a few initial parts, but the precision and surface finish were nowhere near sufficient. At the same time, I became increasingly aware of just how impressive modern precision machines from manufacturers such as Kern and Hermle are — technically fascinating, but practically out of reach for a small independent workshop. More compact solutions such as the Zorn Micro and Chiron Micro 5 also impressed me greatly, yet they too were in an unattainable price range of more than €250,000.

AHCI

In 2024, I was approached by a watchmaker well known through the AHCI about taking on a senior role in his manufacture and helping to manage it over the long term. I gave the offer serious consideration. Yet the very prospect of working in a manufacture brought my old ideas and plans back into focus. I realised that I wanted to bring my own ideas to life.

By then, I had already spent years designing watches and researching machinery, manufacturing options and suppliers. One conclusion became ever clearer: anyone who wants to produce truly uncompromising, high-quality one-off pieces or small series will sooner or later need a high-precision CNC milling machine of their own.

Back to CNC

So the search began again. I spent countless hours comparing technical data, reading first-hand reports and analysing used machines. But every compromise brought new problems. Many machines were too large, too heavy, too old or too imprecise. Others no longer had spare-parts support or suffered from obsolete electronics and software. With older machines in particular, any fault can quickly turn into a major, time-consuming undertaking.

Then, while browsing “maschinensucher.de”, I came across a machine I had never seriously considered before: a Primacon PFM 24 NGD. Technically, it was almost perfectly suited to watchmaking — high-precision five-axis machining, an extremely fast Fischer spindle and micrometre-level positioning accuracy. The problem: it weighed more than 1,000 kilograms and was a few centimetres too large to fit through my doors. 

That should have settled the matter. But this time I could not let the machine go. I began measuring the workshop, planning routes and calculating every possible option. It quickly became clear that moving it in would be absurdly complicated: a ramp over the entrance steps, lifting the machine more than a metre in the hallway, taking out a stair railing and dismantling a doorway — essentially impossible.

A Change of Mind

So, on the spur of the moment, I flew to Geneva to see the machine in person. It had originally come from Cartier Paris and was in exceptionally good condition at RDMO in France. It soon became clear: this was the machine.

The transport that followed was one of the greatest logistical challenges of my life to date. Over two days, the machine was moved through the workshop centimetre by centimetre. Doors had to be removed, components adapted and even part of a stair plinth cut away to create enough clearance. But finally, the Primacon was in place.

Installation

This was followed by extensive modifications to the workshop. Machines like this require enormous volumes of high-purity compressed air, so a completely new compressed-air supply system had to be installed, including a rotary screw compressor and air-drying system. Renovation work and new extra-tall doors were also required.

At the same time, I began learning HEIDENHAIN Klartext — the machine’s conversational programming language. I was also still teaching on the master watchmaker course at the Hessian Watchmaking School, for which I planned and delivered lessons. Some basic settings had also been lost during transport, so the automatic tool changer did not initially function correctly. Only after intensive troubleshooting and several telephone calls with the manufacturer could the machine be fully commissioned.

One year after the machine was moved into the workshop, we are now producing high-precision watch components on the Primacon PFM 24 NGD in our new manufacture.

This finally makes it possible to realise our own designs to the quality standard I have always envisioned. The first is a completely revised version of my original 2012 tourbillon, presented as a strictly limited Founders Edition.

Planned Projects

Future

Naturally, there are already further plans and ideas for what will follow the Vision Tourbillon. Given my background and my love of chronographs, two projects are especially close to my heart: a flying tourbillon with a classic chronograph mechanism of my own design, and an independent project to convert an Omega Speedmaster with calibre 321 into a tourbillon. Tourbillons with an additional chronograph function are rare — a combination that particularly appeals to me. The particular challenge of the Speedmaster project lies in its design: the character of the watch is to be preserved and accentuated, while the movement is elevated technically and aesthetically to the highest level.

I also have another idea waiting in the drawer, this one centred on Bitcoin art: a tourbillon limited to 21 pieces, featuring numerous artistic elements from the world of Bitcoin — and available exclusively for purchase with Bitcoin.

Another concept study that I have been working on for a long time is the Ultrallion: a high-frequency tourbillon with a constant-force mechanism, jumping minutes and a long power reserve.

The next stage of development could be a multi-axis version of the Vision Tourbillon — initially with two axes, and later with three.
